JORDAN DOME AND THE SPACE JAM PICK-UP GAMES

Victor Santo FOTO: Warner Bros, Earvin "Magic" Johnson Jr.

This was Jordan's first movie role with Space Jam, a film that was very successful after its release by Warner Bros. in 1996. In addition, M.J. needed to fully get back in shape before the start of the 1995-96 season, as he was away from the courts due to his retirement in 1993 and for having adapted his training routine to his then new moment in baseball playing for the Chicago White Sox.

The summer of 1995 was eventful and critical for Michael Jordan the shooting was about to begin. But how could he devote himself to filming the scenes while preparing for the next NBA season? Jordan figured that having a complete structure for him to work out and practice would be a mandatory condition for his participation in the film, and so Warner Bros went along with the idea and built a facility named "Jordan Dome", a huge inflated tent in its own parking lot.

Jordan had such a strict schedule that it seemed almost impossible to keep it up. Filming took place from Monday to Saturday, from 7 am to 7 pm, with a two-hour break for mid-day exercises that were conducted by his personal trainer, Tim Grover. Once shooting was finished, Jordan would take a break in the “Jordan Dome”, which would be the third part of his day, which would end around 10 pm.

Due to the fact that MJ's expectation was to get back in shape before the next season, Jordan invited the best players in the league at the time, precisely to simulate real game situations. Among them were Dennis Rodman, Magic Johnson, Reggie Miller, Horace Grant, LaSalle Thompson, Eddie Jones, Juwan Howard, Jack Haley, making possible some of the best games ever witnessed in basketball training sessions.

Not only Michael Jordan won his 4th championship with the Chicago Bulls that year, but also got the Monstars defeated by the Tune Squad. Space Jam had a worldwide turnover of 230 million dollars.
