The innovative AIR MAX technology was originally launched in 1987, through the design of Tinker Hatfield, which was influenced by the invention created ten years earlier by Frank Rudy, when he installed an air bag on a Nike Tailwind right on the sole, it would forever revolutionize the shoes industry by having for the first time a visible cushioning system in a sports shoe, that is, the Air Max 1.


Initially developed as a tool focused on performance improvement, aacceptance in the world of sport was unanimous and allowed the design of a series of other shapes and lines using the same technology. Not to mention that the resource previously  conceived only for performance purposes, also attracted lifestyle consumers.


On the eve of Air Max Day, the day that Nike annually celebrates the birth of AIR MAX on March 26th, we have separated some of the models that carry the most striking colorways and use this technology, in addition to the best and coolest collaborations among brands in recent years:

 

NIKE AIR MAX 1 OG "RED"

 

 

The Air Max 1 together with the famous colors OG Red and Blue it’s a turning point  in the career of its creator, Tinker Hatfield. Launched in 1987, the silhouette laid the foundation for at least 30 years of revolution and evolution in the running shoe industry.

 


 

NIKE AIR MAX 1 x ATMOS "ELEPHANT"

 

 

Initially launched in 2007 through a collaboration with the Japanese brand Atmos, the coveted Air Max 1 model known for its elephant print fabric, similar to the Air Jordan 3 White/Black Cement, returned in 2017 after a voting process created by the brand among fans to find out which silhouette should be relaunched.

 


 

NIKE AIR MAX 1 x PARRA

 

 

The collaboration between Nike and the Dutch designer Piet Parra is certainly one of the most acclaimed in the history of AIR MAX. In 2018, Parra would return, after 8 years, to develop more projects with the brand. He was responsible for creating established silhouettes between Air Max 1 CherryWood and Air Max 95 ‘The Running Man’.

 


 

NIKE AIR MAX 1 "MASTER"

 

 

Commemorative launch of 30 years since its first silhouette, the Air Max 1 Master was inspired by the documentary ‘Masters of Air, Vol. 1 whose details have been inspired from other successful colorways that have stamped the model.

NIKE AIR MAX 90 "INFRARED"

 

 

Infrared is the original color from when the Air Max 90 was launched, and even after more than 30 years, it remains alive and much desired by shoes enthusiasts and collectors.

 


 

NIKE AIR MAX 90 30TH ANNIVERSARY PACK

 

 

For celebrating 30 years of the Air Max 90, Nike launched a new style of the 90s classic  inspired by the colors of at the time of its launch. The celebration pack consisted of three vibrant colors: "Hyper Turquoise,", "Volt," and "Hyper Grape,".

NIKE AIR MAX 90 x ATMOS "DUCK HUNTER CAMO"

 

 

Launched in 2013 in collaboration with Hidefumi Hommyo's Japanese brand ATMOS, the Duck Camo Hunter from the Duck Camo Pack, has become one of the most wished silhouettes in Japan and also worldwide, mainly for preserving details from its original version.

 


 

NIKE AIR MAX 90 "CORK"

 

 

Despite some divergent opinions, the silhouette characterized in cork has become one of the lightest ever produced, but not recommended for performance due to obvious reasons. It is already considered an indispensable item for sneakerheads.

 


 

NIKE AIR MAX 90 x DAVE’S QUALITY MEAT "BACON"

 

 

This is the product of a collaboration with Dave Ortiz's traditional meat emporium, the limited-edition silhouette called ‘Bacon’ was launched in 2004 as one of his main ‘dishes’.

 


 

NIKE AIR MAX 90 "WARHAWK"

 

 

Part of the 2007-Armed Forces Pack, the Air Max 90 is one of the most creative silhouettes ever manufactured. It has been inspired by details of fighter planes used in World War II, the P-40 Warhawk.

 


 

NIKE AIR MAX 90 x OFF-WHITE "THE TEN PACK"

 

 

 

One of the ten models in the ‘The Ten’ collection signed by designer Virgil Abloh, the intention was to deconstruct the classic model with softer colors, textures and materials. The silhouette came at a time when the brand sought to rejuvenate and rescue ‘forgotten’ models.

 


 

NIKE AIR MAX 180 OG "ULTRAMARINE"

 

 

Developed by Tinker Hatfield and launched in 1991, the model once again attracted attention as the first brand’s shoe to have an air-cushioning pouch in contact with the ground.

 


 

NIKE AIR MAX 93 "MENTHOL"

 

 

Launched in 1993 with a modern and minimalist proposal, the silhouette innovated at the time using materials such as neoprene together with the air pouch exposed at 270º on the back of the shoe. It would be relaunched in 2014 and later in 2018,  and  also it would serve as an inspiration for the successor Air Max 270.

 


 

NIKE AIR MAX 95 OG "NEON GREEN"

 

 

One of the most popular models in the Air Max line to date. When launched, it again brought innovation and comfort to runners with cushioning pouches spread across the front of the shoe, in addition to the traditional ones located towards the heel.

 


 

NIKE AIR MAX 97 "SILVER BULLET"

 

 

Sergio Lozano's creation would emerge 10 years after the technology that revolutionized the shoes industry. This time, instead of having only the air pouch positioned towards the heels, almost the entire foot extension was filled with cushioning. The shoe is still one of the most sought after by those passionate about fashion and design.

 


 

NIKE AIR MAX 97 x SEAN WOTHERSPOON

 

 

Nike invited 12 designers to develop a project creating what the future of the Nike Air would look like. Revolutionairs, as they were called, developed their shoes to be voted by the public. The winner was the designer and owner of Round Two stores, Sean Wotherspoon, who was inspired by vintage references and close friends.

 


 

NIKE AIR MAX 97 x OFF-WHITE "QUEEN"

 

 

Launched in 2018 and designed by Virgil Abloh, the disconstructed classic is part of the ‘Queen’ collection by Serena Williams.

 


 

NIKE AIR MAX 98 "GUNDAM"

 

 

Twenty years after the launch of the original model, the Air Max 98 'Gundam'  appeared in 2018, named after its resemblance to the RX-78-2 robot from the Japanese anime franchise 'Mobile Suit Gundam'.

 


 

NIKE AIR MAX 270 REACT "BAUHAUS"

 

 

The Nike Air Max 270 React has a very noticeable relationship with the history of art and design. Each colorway translates into a  specific artistic style or movement, and some say that in this colorway, the shoe discreetly waves at  the classic work of Piet Mondrian due  to the colors used.

 


 

NIKE AIR MAX 270 REACT x TRAVIS SCOTT "CACTUS JACK"

 

 

After the launch of successful collabs with models like Air Jordan 1, Air Jordan 4 and Air Force 1 with Cactus Jack, of Travis Scott ,the rapper continued to lead the market with the launch of the Nike Air Max 270 React x TRAVIS SCOTT "CACTUS JACK "in 2020.

 


 

NIKE AIR MAX PLUS "TIGER"

 

 

Known for its warm tones in gradient and for resembling the colors of a tiger's skin, it is one of the most well-known colors of the Air Max Plus. The model was originally launched in 1998 and then relaunched in 2015.

 


 

NIKE AIR MORE UPTEMPO OG "BLACK"

 

 

Developed by Wilson Smith in 1996, the model gained notoriety when Scottie Pippen wore it in the Chicago Bulls’ heydays. It emerged as an innovative option compared to other basketball shoes available at the time.

 


 

NIKE AIR GRIFFEY MAX 1 "FRESHWATER"

 

 

Well known on baseball fields through MLB legend Ken Griffey Jr, the classic colorway was launched in 1996 and returned in 2021 on its 25th anniversary.

 


 

NIKE AIR MAX LEBRON 8 "SOUTH BEACH"

 

 

 

Launched in 2010 when LeBron James played for the Miami Heat, the shoe surprised the world with its shapes, lines colors and Air Max technology that stretched along the entire feet. A best seller at the time, it is still in high demand among Miami's locals and shoes fanatics around the world.

 


 

NIKE AIR MAX 2 CB 94 "WHITE"

 

 

Another classic of the courts in the 90s and very representative for having made history at the feet of Charles Barkley in the Phoenix Suns. The Air Max 2 was a continuation of its predecessor Air Force Max, a sneaker worn for some time by the FAB 5 at the University of Michigan.

 


 

NIKE AIR MAX ZERO OG "AIR MAX DAY"

 

 

Developed by Tinker Hatfield and launched in 2016 (30 years after its original sketch), Air Max Zero celebrated the beginning of everything and was one of the responsibles for the birth of Air Max 1. An explainable reason why it is considered a very desired and memorable colorway.

 


 

We could spend hours, days, months and perhaps even years illustrating all the existing colorways and collabs. But the goal is to show the importance and representation of so many models throughout history.
