The WNBA is all about women, their well-deserved place in professional basketball, and to those who live the sport, they know the  Women USA Basketball team has become unbeatable thanks to the professionalism of the women’s league, that is to say, thanks to the WNBA.

In case you live outside of the United States you may have not noticed the various celebrations that took place for David Stern who was a key player in the conception and formation of the WNBA back in 1997. Stern passed away on January 01, 2020 in New York City.

In July this year, he received the highest honor the women’s league can pay to one of its members, he has been inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame. He was immortalized in the induction class by former players Tamika Catchings, Swin Cash, Lauren Jackson and Debbie Brock, along with contributors Carol Callan, Sue Donohoe and Carol Stiff.

The ceremony was attended by a vast number of African-Americans involved with civil rights movement, NBA, NCAA and WNBA players and executives.

It was a very emotional time for his son, Eric Stern, who attended the ceremony along with family members and represented his father and quoted: "The WNBA was my father's baby," It was something he had to fight for. He had to spend a lot of professional capital, and even some personal capital, to make it happen. There were a lot of doubters. He tended to enjoy conflict and didn't mind it at all. He did a lot of civil rights work as he was growing up. He had a strong conviction toward equity and equality."

As we can see from his son’s quote, here is a man, who devoted his life towards a more equal society, putting long work hours and money in civil rights cases, and in creating the WNBA. Oldtimers from the league say they remember David going around the hallways saying that women should have a professional league of their own and the NBA should be more involved with racial inequality issues.

As we can see, STREETOPIA felt the need to report to its readers the level of statesmanship David Stern had, which went way beyond the NBA, in addition to the overwhelming emotional ceremony held here in the US.
